About the app
What it does
md-reader opens a folder of Markdown files and shows them rendered, with real typographic controls: font, size, line height, measure, focus mode. Switch to the source to edit, or work side by side. Wikilinks and backlinks are resolved from the files themselves; there is an outline, search across the whole folder, task checkboxes that write back to the file, and light and dark themes. Everything stays in your folder.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps notes, documentation or a knowledge base as plain .md files and wants a quick, comfortable reader for them.
What it doesn't do
It is not an IDE and not a note-taking app with its own storage: it only ever reads and writes the .md files in the folder you choose. It does not sync, has no plugin marketplace and runs only on Apple Silicon Macs. The build is not signed by Apple, so macOS asks you to allow it once.
For the curious
What I checked
Checked
Installed on my own phone, permissions read from the finished build, network traffic watched. Everything the app downloads comes from one place: a script on GitHub fetches the sources below, turns them into small files and serves them from there. The app never talks to these institutions directly.
Permissions
- The folder you openthe Markdown files inside it, which it reads and, when you edit, writes. Nothing else on the disk.
Talks to
- Nobodythe app has no network code and no update check. Two things can reach outside: an image in your own note that points to a web address is loaded from there, and links open in your browser.
Not in the app
No analytics, no crash reports, no account, no automatic updates, no cloud sync, no advertising, no installer beyond a disk image.
