About the app

What it does

Polish and EU authorities publish warnings about unsafe food, products and medicines, often as articles on their own websites or in registers nobody opens. In Hand pulls five of those sources into one place — food and products from Poland and the EU, and medicines withdrawn in Poland — tells you when a new one matches what you follow, and lets you check a batch number or a barcode against them right in the shop or the pharmacy.

Who it's for

Anyone who buys food, everyday products or medicines in Poland.

What it doesn't do

It never says a product is safe: a barcode identifies the product, not the batch, so it asks you to compare the batch number yourself — except for medicines, whose packs carry the batch in their code. It doesn't translate the warnings; they stay in the language they were published in. It doesn't tell you to stop a treatment: for a withdrawn medicine it says return the pack to the pharmacy and talk to a doctor or pharmacist. It collects nothing about you.

For the curious

What I checked

Checked

Installed on my own phone, permissions read from the finished build, network traffic watched. Everything the app downloads comes from one place: a script on GitHub fetches the sources below, turns them into small files and serves them from there. The app never talks to these institutions directly.

Where the data comes from

  • GISpublic food warnings for Poland (gov.pl), four times a day.
  • UOKiKsellers' notices about unsafe products sold in Poland (uokik.gov.pl).
  • GIFthe register of decisions on withdrawn medicines (rdg.ezdrowie.gov.pl), once a day.
  • RASFFEU food alerts for products that reached Poland (ec.europa.eu), once a day.
  • Safety GateEU alerts about unsafe products, Polish edition (ec.europa.eu), weekly reports.

Permissions

  • Camerareads the barcode on the pack. No photo is saved or sent.
  • Internetdownloads the warning data.
  • Notificationsone message when a new warning matches what you follow.
  • Start after reboot, run in the backgroundso the check happens even when the app is closed.
  • Vibrationa short buzz when a scan finds a match.
  • Launcher badgesasked for by the notification library; the app never puts a number on its icon.

Talks to

  • gosiarutkowska.github.iowarning data and product photos, four times a day. GitHub sees your IP address when the app syncs or loads a photo.
  • gov.pl, uokik.gov.pl, rdg.ezdrowie.gov.pl, ec.europa.eu, buymeacoffee.com, aithatgives.orglinks to the source notice and in Settings. They open your browser; the app itself sends nothing there.
